]]>What is fast fashion? And why is it such an issue?
As we work towards a more sustainable future in the fashion industry, it’s important to identify what exactly it is we’re fighting for and against. Because, honey, knowledge is power.
If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a closet jam-packed with clothes yet unable to find anything to wear, fast fashion may have you in a chokehold.
Fast fashion is a business model in the fashion industry that involves extremely fast production cycles aimed at getting the hottest fads, trends, and runway designs into the hands of consumers in the shortest amount of time possible (sometimes as little as 3 days) and at very low prices.
This fast fashion definition basically highlights the problem: prioritizing of speed and cost over quality and sustainability.
Because fast fashion brands are churning out new collections weekly, sometimes daily. And with the rise of social media and influencer culture and trends that pop up every other second, it is not uncommon to buy clothes just for the sake of it.
And since those random shopping sprees are the norm these days, the fast fashion industry will get even faster in the future.
So why is it so controversial?
Have you ever wondered about the processes involved in making your clothes and about the people who make them?
What is fast fashion doing to churn these trends out at such neck-breaking speeds?
The truth is, there are a lot of shady things happening underground to keep fast fashion so cheap and produced so quickly. Especially involving the supply chain.
For one, these brands rely on factories that are essentially sweatshops to minimize the cost of production.
Because if you're paying $5 for a shirt, best believe the person that made it is earning so much less.
The Clean clothes campaign estimates that they may receive less than 3% of the price you paid for it.
Imagine that. Earning way below minimum wage, working 14-16 hour days, for 7 days a week. No breaks, no overtime, no benefits, and no rights.
They are exposed to toxins that are detrimental to their health and are at high risk of accidents, fires, and disasters.
And that's not all.
The industry also relies heavily on child labor and forced labor. It's basically modern-day slavery.
A lot!
We’ve heard about the impact of deforestation, fossil fuels, and plastics on the environment. Well, fast fashion contributes to all this and then some.
Every year, the fashion industry generates 10% of global carbon emissions and 20% of industrial water pollution worldwide, making it one of the most harmful sectors on the planet.
Every step in the life cycle of a piece of clothing does some form of damage to the earth. From production to use and eventual disposal.
Synthetic fabric.
You may know them as polyester, spandex, nylon, acrylic, and elastane, but what they are essentially is plastic.
These materials are cheap and versatile, but they are also derived from fossil fuels—and we all know how bad fossil fuels are for the environment.
Natural fibers like cotton aren’t innocent either.
The cultivation of cotton involves obscene amounts of chemicals—mostly fertilizers and pesticides—that leach into the soil and groundwater and contaminate them.
Runoff from these farms also introduces toxins into surrounding water bodies, leading to increased cases of deformities, cancer, stillbirths, and deaths among locals who depend on these water sources.
But the pollution doesn’t end there.
Washing your clothes releases tiny plastic particles called microplastics every wash cycle. And those things get everywhere.
Researchers have found them in the weirdest of places—from placentas to internal organs. The highest mountains to the bottom of the oceans.
In fact, ocean floors are especially littered with them. About half a million tons of microplastics find their way into the ocean each year—the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles. Every year!
You're covered in microplastics right now. And your food? It's sprinkled in there too.
Researchers have discovered that, on average, people ingest approximately 5 grams of plastic every week. That’s equivalent to eating a credit card every week.
Yuck.
And it gets worse still—this is getting depressing.
Nearly 60% of all clothing produced ends up in incinerators or landfills within a year of being made.
That's a whole lot of waste. Especially when you consider that 100-150 billion garments are produced every year.
And because of the nature of the fibers, they remain in those landfills for centuries without decomposing. CENTURIES!
It’s literally a toxic cycle…
And finally, honey, there's you.
Because clothes are such a big part of our lives, there's no escaping the direct impact fast fashion has on us.
The business model of fast fashion depends on repeat purchases to make a profit. So the marketing tactics exploit your existing insecurities and instill new ones in order to sell you product after product.
You may find yourself trying to keep up with the ever-changing trends. Chasing things that don't exist and searching for things that aren't lost.
They sell you this lifestyle that requires constant updates and upgrades. Your wardrobe is never complete without this or that. You repeat clothes? That's practically a crime!
Plus, the designers make clothes that last only a few wears to keep you coming back for more.
Now that we know the issues—and this list is by no means extensive—what can we do as a society to keep these guys in check and contribute to more sustainable fashion?
It’s important to hold these companies accountable for their actions, but they will never be truly willing to change as long as there’s money to be made. Because demand creates supply.
That’s where you come in, honey. Here’s what you can do to make your fashion more sustainable:
You’re at the heart of all our processes, and so is the environment. Our production process is completely transparent—from inception to sourcing and production. We craft quality pieces that you’ll be wearing for years to come!
It’s easy to become overwhelmed or to feel like the weight of the planet now rests upon your shoulders, but don’t let ‘perfect’ be the enemy of ‘good’.
Every step you take or part you play towards a more sustainable future is a step in the right direction.
So start wherever you are, and you’ll see the results compound over time.

]]>Gather your festie besties, because it's that time again! The stars are aligning, the desert is calling, and the Playa is gearing up for another round of magic and mayhem. Get ready to trade the ordinary for the extraordinary as Burning Man sets the stage for a journey like no other. So grab your Burning Man tickets, dust off your wildest dreams, and let the adventure unfold!
Calling Burning Man a "festival" would be like trying to fit an entire galaxy into a snow globe. It's an otherworldly experience where creativity, community, and self-expression converge in the heart of the desert.
Burning Man is an invitation to shake off the chains of everyday life and embrace a world where norms are shattered, and radical ideas are celebrated.
Picture a canvas of boundless creativity, where towering mechanical octopuses juggle flames under the starlit night, and retro-futuristic rocketships evoke dreams of a bygone space age.
See yourself stumbling upon a life-size game of Operation, or being pursued by the infamous Animal Control Art Car, all beneath the vast desert sky. This, my friends, is the essence of Burning Man.
So, you've heard the whispers of the epic desert gathering called Burning Man. But why should you be the next wild soul to hop on the Playa train?
Burning Man is a full-blown, life-altering experience. Sure, there are legendary parties and mind-blowing art installations, but those are just the tip of the iceberg.
It's a profound spiritual odyssey to freedom beyond your wildest imagination! From dawn till dusk, you'll be surrounded by a vibrant community of kindred spirits who are there to uplift, inspire, and support your journey.
So, if you're ready to embrace a world of infinite possibilities, fasten your seatbelt for the adventure of a lifetime!
Burning Man tickets disappear faster than you can say 'radical self-expression'! To stay in the loop, visit the ticket information page for all the latest updates.
Remember these dates: the FOMO Sale in February, the Main Sale in April, and the OMG Sale in August.
The Ticket Aid Program in March is for people with genuine financial needs, and if you were unsuccessful in previous sales, the Secure Ticket Exchange Program is your last chance to get lucky.
Pre-register by creating a burner profile on the official website. Only then are you eligible to participate in the ticket sales. When sales begin, return to the website and follow all instructions.
Remember, the process can be competitive, so you’ll have to act fast.
Good luck!
Now that you've scored those Burning Man tickets, let's talk fashion, shall we? Because stepping onto the Playa dressed in anything less than fab is a fashion sin you just can't afford to commit!
I mean, how many opportunities do you get to unleash your wildest, most extravagant imaginations in clothing form? Make the most out of this one!
If you’re not quite sure where to begin, I’ll let you in on an absolute gem! HerPony offers some stunning, sustainable pieces that are the very embodiment of Burning Man fashion!
I promise you’ll be turning heads left and right with these timeless fits.
Hold onto your hat and your sense of direction, because dust storms at Burning Man can pack a punch!
The desert's extreme temperature shift is no joke—it goes from scorching days to chilly nights! So your wardrobe needs to be as versatile as your dance moves. Pack outfits that keep you cool under the blazing sun and cozy when the desert chill sets in.
Gear up like a fashion-forward explorer with stylish goggles and a scarf to shield your face from the desert sand.
Unleash your inner goddess with matching sets from the Kiah collection. Crafted from sustainable rayon material, these outfits don't just look cool; they're soft and breathable, keeping you comfortable even in the scorching heat.
Of course, everyone knows that a festival isn’t complete without a kimono. They are so versatile! The lightweight Nevada Kimono adds layers to your outfit without the extra baggage.
And when you’re scaling sculptures, bouncing on trampolines, and dancing the night away, jumpsuits and two-pieces will be your go-to.
While you're planning your epic outfits, don't forget to plan for another essential part of your Burning Man saga: sleeping arrangements. Your choice of shelter can be the difference between an unforgettable adventure and a chaotic escapade.
Those flimsy camper tents may hold up nicely for camping, but they are no match for desert conditions. A sturdy, high-quality tent with UV protection isn't just a nice-to-have; it's an absolute necessity!
An RV is considered the pinnacle of luxury because it is decked out with all the amenities—bathrooms, kitchens, and even air conditioning. There’s no need to break the bank renting one, though. Not when there are so many convenient tent options available. Just make sure they’re desert-friendly.
Speaking of convenience, let's address the question of leaving early.
Of course you can leave early. It's not prison. You can even re-enter if you'd like, for a fee of $20.
With this in mind, remember that your Burning Man journey doesn’t have to take a linear path. You don't have to participate in every event to have a transcendent experience. The moments that matter are the ones you make count.
You stand at the threshold of an unforgettable experience—one that will leave an indelible mark on your soul. Your Burning Man adventure will be an ongoing process of iteration and reiteration, so embrace it wholeheartedly.
May the memories you create, the friendships you forge, and the art you witness continue to kindle the flame of Burning Man's spirit within you long after the event has ended.
]]>It doesn't get more vintage and sustainable than our deadstock collection, honeys. These unique treasures are cute, waste-free, and ultimately individual, just the way we like it.
What is deadstock?
The special thing about deadstock is it's the very last rolls of fabric that stores need to move, often as a result of companies overstocking. Purchasing deadstock means we're not creating more demand for fabric, but using what's already there and reducing textile waste.
Deadstock is ethical slow fashion at its finest, giving a second life to fabric that would have otherwise ended up in landfill. It's one of our favourite things about our Creative Director, Lauren. Her talented eye for seeing the potential of what end of the line fabrics could become. It takes her right back to Her Pony's humble beginnings, hunting for sustainable vintage. One mans trash is another mans treasure, right?
Taking one-of-a-kind clothing to new heights
These limited edition ranges are the epitome of unique, as there is only enough fabric for a few of each style to be made. If you're lucky enough to get your hands on one, you'll be one of the only ones to call it yours. How special is that?
]]>
At Her Pony we proudly choose quality fabrics over quantity production, to ensure your clothes are handmade with love and designed to last. But we need you to do your bit too honeys, to make sure your treasures keep their sparkle.
Cold wash only, on a delicate setting.
Do not tumble dry, and when air drying avoid full sun as it fades the colours.
For your beaded and sequined items: spot clean only - option b is the dry cleaner.
Use environmentally friendly detergent (this one's for everyone: you, your clothes, and the earth, too)
When your pieces start showing wear and tear from love, repair them, upcycle them, pass them on, or donate them. After all, that's Her Pony's humble beginnings.
We don't want to see our clothes in landfill - let's work together to create circular fashion.
]]>Transparency, accountability, sustainability.
They all go hand in hand with our vision for a slow fashion future. We want to ensure we are always transparent with our honeys about where your clothes come from and who makes them. About the love, care and detail that goes into creating pieces that will last. We believe transparency is the key to it all - it holds us, and you, accountable for our role in the fashion industry. Once we can do this, sustainability is a no brainer.
In light of transparency, we have been waiting patiently (okay... kind of impatiently) to return to Bali to reconnect with our team here. And we finally made it! After a few days visiting and spending time with the team again - meeting the bright new faces and reconnecting with our long standing employees of 5+ years - our cups are feeling so full. Judging by the smiles and laughter, we know it meant a lot to each of them too.
So, let us introduce you to your wonderful and talented makers. We are beyond grateful for the incredible job each and every one of these people do:
Row 1 L-R: Munif (sewer), Nita (sewer), Ima (checker), Yani (cutter), Kadek (sewer), Lauren (Director), Dwi (checker), Anie (checker), Utami (checker), Aas (cutter), Tina (checker) | Row 2 L-R: Agus (sewer), Ulfa (sewer), Adisty (sewer), Nia (checker), Yatni (sewer), Saiful (sewer), Jana (cutter) | Row 3 L-R: Rima (sewer), Reni (sewer), Rindy (Senior Manager and Pattern Maker), Wayan (Senior Manager and Product Coordinator), Budi (cutter)
So much happiness and love in one photo - all the warm fuzzy feels.
A lot of the sewers and cutters were shy and didn't speak English so we got by on the basics of "apa nama kamu" (what is your name in Indonesian) and "Suksuma" (thank you in Balinese. They're always SO happy when you know Balinese as not a lot of people take time to learn the language of the island) with lots of smiles and hand gestures.
We did manage to sit down with a few of our long standing employees though and wanted to take the time to introduce them a little further:
This is Rindy and Wayan. Rindy (Head Production 1 + Pattern Maker) has been with Her Pony for 6 years and has a husband of 10 years and 5 year old daughter, Renesmee. She's from Java but came to Bali when she was 3 and now lives with her family in Denpasar. Her family from Java come to visit her once every couple of months and when asked what she likes to do on the weekends she responded: "scroll through TikTok" - can relate Rindy, we feel that.
Wayan is a single mum of her 16yo daughter, Cantika (meaning pretty - how cute is that). She has been with Her Pony for 7 years and also now lives in Denpasar but is from a little village in the mountains called Kintamani. She said she would like to take us there and says "working for Her Pony makes me very happy". We feel the same about you, Wayan, thank you.
This is Munif. He came up to Lauren after the group photo to let her know (in translated Indonesian) that he has missed her coming to visit. When we sat down with him and Wayan translated for us that he has been with Her Pony for 5 years, is from Java and now lives with his wife and children in Denpasar. He turned to Lauren with the most genuine expression and said he is very happy working for Her Pony and very grateful to Lauren. He wishes Her Pony to keep growing and being more successful (talk about a tear jerker, Munif). In his spare time he makes traditional Balinese costumes for ceremonies - when you love what you do, why not do it on weekends, too?
We can't even put into words how much it means to us to have this relationship with our makers. We want to share with you that we are so much more than just a label that makes pretty treasures - we love what we do and the people that make it happen. Which is exactly the way it should be.
The theme of this years Fashion Revolution Week is "Money Fashion Power" and as they so accurately state: "big brands and retailers produce too much too fast and manipulate us into a toxic cycle of overconsumption. Meanwhile, the majority of people feel that the people who make our clothes are not paid enough to meet their basic needs, and already feel impacts of the climate crisis."
We couldn't agree more with this. At Her Pony we create small batch runs that keep their unique value. We don't follow trends, and we create treasures that are new now, but will be vintage scores of the future one day. Before your pieces even leave the Bali Hub they have passed through at least 4 loving and attentive hands: from our cutters (who cut the fabric to be sewn), sewers, checkers (who snip spare thread and brush the clothes of any loose fabric) and finally our packers. Each of these people are paid above fair wage and given allowances for food and ceremonies.
We are transparent, and we will continue to be.
We are holding ourselves accountable, and will continue to do so.
We are continuously searching for ways to meet our sustainable goals, whilst upholding quality, and will not stop until we reach that.
Thank you for supporting us as we do this honeys, and for holding yourselves accountable in supporting slow fashion.

]]>You honeys are giving us all kinds of butterflies in your HP looks. Just thought you should know. Thanks for sharing, babes.
Each and every year, the countdown comes and goes, resolutions are made (and shortly thereafter broken) and loved ones clink glasses and kiss. You know how it goes, honey. New year, same stint.
Well, for some, that is. We do things a little extra. At Her Pony, we know there’s no finer way of welcoming the new year than side by side with your besties in matching (and rather eye-catching) outfits.
You can’t convince us otherwise.
Whether you’re turning heads in organic cotton separates, flaunting it in matching festival outfits or recruiting your entire crew to wear the same vintage inspired psychedelic print, there’s nothing more memorable than causing a cute scene with the ones you love most.

]]>Slow fashion is ethically and sustainably produced items that are created thoughtfully in small batches to reduce waste. In a simple sense, it’s the opposite to fast fashion: often mass produced low price and low quality items with high turnover rate, encouraging over consumption and waste.
Her Pony (HP) designs and creates slow fashion clothing that’s made with love and made to last. Items that will be staples of your closet for years to come, with consciously chosen fabrics that have a minimal negative impact to Mother Earth.
Part of our sustainable journey is asking our honeys to question the “true cost” of something cheap they buy online. Although the impact on your bank account may be small - at what cost? How much was the person who made it paid? What kind of conditions are they working in? Where does the fabric come from, what is the quality, and what impact does it have on the environment? Was it produced in mass and this is the last of it before it gets thrown to landfill?
This is exactly why we believe in being transparent about the process of how our clothes come to land in that cute little plastic free package that lands on your doorstep. We believe it’s important to know where your clothes come from, how they are made, and who makes them.
We have a team of 20 in Bali who are paid fairly on a skilled basis, with extra money for daily meals and special ceremonies. Some of the members of this team have been with HP for over 6 years because of how happy they are working there.
Prior to COVID-19 directors Lauren and Steph would regularly visit the HP warehouse in Bali to ensure the team were happy and well looked after – something they’re looking forward to doing again soon.
Our dedication to slow fashion is shown through our design process. It takes approximately 5-9 months from designing a new pattern to the release of a new line. This allows plenty of time for conscious decisions to be made to ensure the final product is the best we can possibly provide.
In a very condensed form, it looks a little like this:
Our owner and designer Lauren, finds vintage inspiration and creates a new print in collaboration with a graphic artist. This process takes quite a few weeks as there is a lot of back and forward and revisions before getting the design just perfect.
The type of fabrics are chosen based on the proposed designs for the range. Choices are made largely on the stretch of the fabric for the clothing chosen (i.e. stretchy for flares, structure for tailored, etc.). The print is then sent to the digital printer along with chosen fabrics for samples to be made. The fabric printer we use works solely with natural & organic fabrics using eco ink.
Once the fabric has been approved & bulk ordered, the designs for the collection are finalised & sent to Rindy of our Bali team to create the patterns. One sample of each design is hand made by our sewing team in Bali and sent to Lauren for approval / adjustments. Lauren carefully analyses the style, fit, fall and cut of the new styles before sending any alteration requests to Bali for the final styles to be created.
Our best selling ranges are restocked in batches, and we keep our releases small to ensure we are keeping with the demand but not overproducing. All items at Her Pony are sold and none end up in landfill from our factory.
We hope our pieces stay with you forever but we know that doesn’t always happen, we just ask if you do pass it on, give it to a friend or to charity so nothing ends up in landfill and our clothing continues to be kind to the environment.
Our journey to a minimal waste brand has been a long one, and one we have by no means accomplished fully. We are constantly learning about new ways we can grow and improve, and as it stands not all of our fabrics are eco/sustainable. Sometimes it is simply not possible to get the eco fabric we need for particular designs, or if we can they are expensive (which often doesn’t sell) so we need to keep that in mind too. However it is a vision we work towards, and when eco isn’t an option, we ensure our fabrics are the highest quality so they last.
We are proudly transparent about how our clothes are made, so if you have any questions please let us know. We believe an important part of reducing waste in the fashion industry is educating people on their role as a consumer – finding out exactly where and how their clothes are made.
Thanks for being fashion conscious honeys, and for supporting us as we continue to better ourselves and find ways to grow as an ethical and sustainable company.
xx

]]>You may not be aware but Her Pony is a sustainable and eco brand that puts the planet first. With every stitch, bead, cut and sew, our garments are hand made with limited production to reduce waste – and with a zero plastic policy to match.
We’re not a big corporation, in fact, we’re the opposite. We’re an Australian team of two that simply aim to create head turning, “damn-I-look-good” feeling, long lasting materials that don’t hurt the environment.
We’re all about slow fashion. And while we’ve always been eco behind the scenes, we’ve decided it’s time to do our part for the earth by highlighting the environmentally conscious decisions that we make so you, in turn, can be buyer aware.
So from today we’ll be introducing “Sustainability Saturday” to educate our customers, and drive us to continually achieve better. We’ll be posting behind the scenes from our factory in Bali, our journey to plastic free, sourcing materials, and much more, so you can get to know Her Pony like we do.
For now, if you’re interested have a little look here at our vision and sustainability so you can learn a little more about what we do.
We want to thank you too, for supporting us and the slow fashion industry. By being industry conscious, you’re making more of a difference than you realise.
Love x
Lauren and Steph
