Hey Honeys, My name is Lauren Stein & I'm the owner of Her Pony.
Born from a love of sewing & vintage clothing - HP began in 2010 in my childhood home in the suburbs of suburban Melbourne. When I was little I was taught how to sew by my mum Mandy who learnt the skill from her mother Clarice, my grandmother. Clarice worked as a tailor & some of our relatives worked as dressmakers in the 1930’s - you could say that sewing runs in the family!
My family spent most Sunday’s at markets hunting for treasures, this is where I became obsessed with vintage - most nights I would sit in front of the TV and cut up the days haul - I would turn vintage dresses into 2 piece sets, long tops into crops & vintage maxi skirts into minis...
I eventually started creating my own designs using vintage patterns & fabrics that I had found at the market - At age 13 I made my first garments from scratch - A pair of sparkly flares and a tie-dye tube top! My wardrobe began to overflow, so I decided to try my luck selling the pieces at Camberwell market. Unexpectedly my stall was swarming, I almost sold out of everything that day - it was then I realised that this could potentially become a business, this is when my passion really took off…
I became a regular at the markets - and mum and I were constantly on an op-shopping mission to source more vintage (to this day it is still our favourite thing to do together) I eventually quit my casual job in hospitality as I realised I actually had a sustainable little business running!
When I was 21 I decided I wanted to go to fashion school to learn how to do things “properly”. At the initial interview I told the course counsellor that I wanted to start my own brand - she advised me not to as it would be “too hard” - she recommended I try to become a fashion buyer instead. I was not happy with that answer & decided not to do the course. Undeterred, I continued on with my passion, I applied & was accepted into the NEIS business course instead (a 6 week business course paid for by the government.) This is where my passion for business began and I learnt the skills I needed to begin to grow the business.
I definitely did not realise what I was signing up for when I started this journey - it has been a crazy rollercoaster ride with many challenges along the way however I am lucky enough to be able to do what I love every day.
I hope my story might inspire others to pursue their dreams with spirit & determination - don’t listen to anyone who says ‘you can’t' - You never know what might happen if you give it a shot.
Dream big honeys,
lots of love, Lauren xxx
